Escape the downtown Rome crowds and head off the beaten track to discover one of the city's most infamous districts. The Esposizione Universale di Roma (better known by its acronym, EUR) was commissioned by Italian dictator Benedito Mussolini in the 1930s to showcase architecture that portrayed his fascist ideologies. Today, it is a thriving commercial suburb. On this four-hour walking tour, visit EUR's Square Colosseum, the Via dei Fori Imperial road and much more. As you explore, your guide will give insight into the historical and political significance of its buildings and monuments.

After meeting your knowledgeable guide in central Rome, head off by luxury coach to Rome's EUR district, just south of the city center. The creation of the EUR was a huge, 1930s urban regeneration project, spearheaded by Mussolini, Italy's controversial prime minister and self-titled Il Duce (meaning "the Leader"), who intended to showcase the area at the 1942 World's Fair to celebrate 20 years of fascist Italy.

However, the World's Fair was abandoned at the onset of World War II, and, subsequently, Mussolini's ambitious EUR project was left incomplete. Although work continued after the war ended, the newer buildings lacked the influence of political agenda and failed to match the grandeur of the regime's earlier architecture. The area as it stands today retains the tantalizing air of an unfinished project.

During your morning walking tour, walk through the EUR's large, symmetrical streets and see examples of Neoclassical architecture from the fascist era. Hear tales of 1930s Rome from your expert guide, and learn about Mussolini’s notorious reign.

Highlights of your EUR walking tour include the Via dei Fori Imperial, the road that linked the Rome Colosseum to the fascist party's headquarters in Piazza Venezia, and the Square Colosseum (Palazzo della Civilta del Lavoro) with its distinctive arches imbedded in its white, marble facade. Just outside of the EUR, visit the Foro Italico, Rome's impressive, fascist-era sports center that is home to an incredible 120-foot-high (36-meter) obelisk and the Stadio dei Marmi, a running track surrounded by 60 marble statues.

After you’ve seen the best EUR sights and satisfied your curiosity about fascism in Rome, head back to central Rome, where your unique morning tour ends.

Highlights of the Vatican Museums

Explore the Gallery of the CandelabraGallery of the Tapestries and our personal favorite, the Gallery of the Maps. Based on painted topographical maps of Italy by Dominican Italian friar Ignazio Danti, the Gallery of Maps is both beautiful and informative. The painted frescoes reveal how Renaissance Italians saw themselves and their surroundings. Predating a unified Italy by nearly 300 years, the Gallery of Maps shows the length and breadth of the peninsula circa 1580.

The Sistine Chapel’s Ceiling
Visit the Sistine Chapel before it’s open to the general public. This is how Michelangelo’s masterpiece was meant to be experienced. Since the chapel is inside the museums, entrance is included in your Vatican tour. Now that the chapel is restored, every detail and color used in the treasured work of art is visible.

Important! If you choose to stay in the Vatican Museums, you are welcome to leave the tour and skip St. Mark’s Basilica. However, if you do this, you cannot use the special entrance and skip the lines. If you decide to leave the tour, return your headset to your tour guide or please note that you will be charged 50€ per headset.

St. Peter’s Basilica
Except on Wednesdays
Skip the lines to St. Peter’s Basilica and enter through a special door to enter the most opulent church in the world. Once inside, admire celebrated artwork including La BaldacchinoLa Pieta, the Statue of St. Peter and more. Then, go underneath the church’s floors to visit the tombs of hundreds of Popes, as well as a Swedish Queen who converted to Roman Catholicism.

Please note: if your Vatican Express Tour lands on a Wednesday, St. Peter’s Basilica is substituted for the Bramante Courtyard. Since Papal Mass takes place on Wednesday mornings - St. Peter’s Basilica is closed until the afternoon.

Important: If you would like to stay in St. Peter's Basilica longer DO NOT leave with your guide to take photos in the piazza. The security line is long and re-entry on your own is not recommended.

The Biggest Bathtub
Wednesday's Only
On Wednesdays, St. Peter's Basilica is substituted with a visit to the Bramante Courtyard and three of the world’s most iconic statues: the Apollo BelvedereLaocoön and His Sons and the Belvedere Torso. You will meet your guide outside the Vatican Museum and bypassing the queues with your skip-the-line ticket you gain immediate entry to the museum complex. You pass through several of the museums galleries and rooms; Gallery of Maps, Gallery of Tapestries and also enter the Pinecone Courtyard. You then work your way towards the stunning Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo’s iconic frescoes; The Last Judgements and the Creation of Adam. (Talking is not allowed inside the chapel so your guide will give you a full commentary before entry)

Then, before the normal throng of tourists arrives, the tour proceeds to the Dome. The tour price includes the elevator ride to the first floor where you get the opportunity to see the spectacular mosaics and stucco embellishments up close. From ground level the mosaics look beautiful but from a close inspection you can really appreciate the intricacy and mastery that went into creating them.

You will have a skip-the-line ticket; so, when you meet your private guide outside the Vatican Museum you gain immediate entry.   You then proceed along the numerous ornate galleries and rooms; the Gallery of Maps; the Gallery of Tapestries and into the Pinecone Courtyard. Great masters like Raphael and Michelangelo created much of the stunning artwork for the popes during the Renaissance period; your guide will recount stories of the rivalry between the artists. As you leave the galleries you enter the magnificent Sistine Chapel with Michelangelo’s iconic ceiling frescoes The Last Judgement and The Creation of Adam on one of the chapel’s walls. (There is no speaking inside the chapel so your guide will explain everything before entry).

Next, the trip to the dome! Not long to wait as you will be there before the usual daily hoards arrive. Included in the tour is the elevator ride to the first level where you get an up close view of the inside of the dome with its stunning mosaics and embellishments. From ground level they are impressive; from up close you can really appreciate the mastery that went into creating such elaborate work.

Then prepare yourself for the climb up the 281 steps that will take you to the top of the dome. The guide will tell you what to look for once you reach the top: spectacular views of St. Peter’s Square; the wonderful view along the long, straight avenue that Mussolini bulldozed and that leads to St. Peter’s and the long distance views across the Tiber to the very centre of ancient Rome. Definitely the best viewing point in the whole of Rome!

It is then back again to ground level for a tour of St. Peter’s Basilica where you will explore the numerous side chapels with their hidden crypts. You will see Michelangelo’s Pietà and your guide will explain why this is the only work that he signed. You will gain an appreciation of the mastery that went into the creation of Bernini’s altarpiece and learn how Michelangelo triumphed over his contemporaries for the honour to paint St. Peter’s magnificent dome.

There is still more to see though below ground level. You guide will lead you below ground to the papal crypt where, over the centuries, many of the Popes have been interred. This special place is a site of pilgrimage for many Catholics. Although talking is allowed, before you enter the crypt you guide will tell you where the most important popes are laid to rest.
