Visit Tivoli on a half-day trip from Rome and explore its two UNESCO-listed villas – Hadrian’s Villa and Villa d’Este – with an expert guide. Have your camera ready to capture incredible ruins, gardens and fountains while learning about the extravagant tastes of the emperors and cardinals who once lived there.

Start your day with a pickup from your central Rome hotel or alternatively, start your tour at a meeting point in town, near Rome Termini Station. Travel east out of the city into the Monti Tiburtini hills, passing the area’s travertine marble quarries, and stop in the hilltop village of Tivoli – the summer home of holidaying Romans.

First stop here is Hadrian’s Villa (Villa Adriana), the former holiday home of Emperor Hadrian – built in the 2nd century AD. More akin to a small village than a home in today’s sense of the word, the ostentatious villa ruins are incredible to visit, with ruins of thermal baths, temples, palaces and theaters just waiting to be explored. Head into the site with your guide, and learn about the emperor’s ancient travels – reportedly the inspiration for many of the monuments -- while walking around.

After your tour of Hadrian’s Villa, return to your coach and travel the short distance to Tivoli’s other showstopping villa – the magnificent Villa d’Este. Built in the heart of the Renaissance – around 1550 – for Cardinal Ippolito II d'Este, Tivoli’s governor, Villa d’Este was a contentious building that upset the local residents as they had to move to make way for it. Walk around the site with your guide, taking in the gardens and posing for photos in front of Bernini-designed fountains while leaning about the Cardinal and his lavish life in the villa.

Return to your coach and relax on the way back to Rome. Your tour then finishes back at the start point – either your hotel or near Rome Termini. Alternatively, you can make use of a drop-off at Via Veneto, Piazza Barberini, Piazza Venezia or Piazza della Repubblica; simply let your guide know on the day.

Discover the UNESCO World Heritage site of Pompeii on this 12-hour independent tour from Rome and enjoy hassle-free round-trip travel by air-conditioned coach. A great way to arrange your do-it-yourself tour of Pompeii, this simple round-trip shuttle service takes you from central Rome right to the heart of ancient Pompeii. Travel in comfort and explore independently, or upgrade your tour to include access to Pompeii’s excavations and a 2-hour guided tour.

Depart from central Rome by air-conditioned coach in the morning and travel out of the city on the 3.5-hour journey to Pompeii.

Nearby Mount Vesuvius erupted on a summer's day here in the year 79AD, covering the town and its many inhabitants in thick layers of volcanic ash. Pompeii has been locked in a time capsule ever since, and the artefacts and buildings on display offer insight into life here almost 2,000 years ago. Today, Pompeii is widely considered to be one of the most impressive archaeological sites in the world — a vibrant, well-preserved and accessible destination offering a fascinating look back to an ancient Italian civilization.

Wander from mosaic to monument and temple to theater as you explore Pompeii independently, and marvel at the site’s strong sense of history. Admire the town’s ancient Forum and thermal baths, where Pompeii’s many residents would have played out their days before the eruption.

Stroll along Via degli Augustali, past the age-old limestone columns still standing, and perhaps pose for photographs in front of the centuries-old scenery. To help you navigate your way around, all paths begin and end with beautiful frescoes depicting scenes from daily life in ancient Pompeii.

Upgrade your tour to gain access to Pompeii’s fascinating excavations and enjoy a 2-hour tour in a group of no more than 25 people, with personalized attention from your guide.

In the mid-afternoon, hop back aboard your air-conditioned coach for the journey back to central Rome where your Rome to Pompeii independent day tour will come to an end.

Discover the foods, wines and hill towns of Tuscany’s Chianti wine region and Umbria on this engaging full-day tour from Rome! Accompanied by an expert local guide, travel through Tuscany’s rolling countryside and visit the lovely medieval town of Cortona, with time to explore its cobbled lanes and absorb its old-world atmosphere. Enjoy a tasty regional lunch at a rural farmhouse restaurant, and wind through the vineyards of Chianti to the hill town of Montepulciano. Here, sample some delicious local wines at a traditional cellar before heading back to Rome.

Start your experience with a pickup from your Rome hotel or meet your guide in the city center and board your air-conditioned coach. Listen to interesting facts about the Italians’ famous love of food and enjoy the views as you head north into lush, southern Tuscany.

Arrive in Cortona and enjoy a walk through the heart of this walled hill town, which is little changed since medieval times. Admire the ocher-colored houses that line the cobbled lanes and piazzas and listen as your guide recounts its history and recent surge in popularity for featuring in 'Under the Tuscan Sun', American writer Frances Mayes’ tales of life in Tuscany in the 1990s.

Perhaps enjoy some free time to look around the picture-postcard streets independently and maybe visit the 19th-century Cathedral of St Margaret (Basilica di Santa Margherita), perched on the hilltop.

Continue along the banks of Lake Trasimeno in Umbria, and stop for lunch at an authentic farmhouse restaurant. Enjoy a tempting 4-course of regional dishes, washed down with drinks (own expense). Please see the Itinerary for a sample menu.

With your appetite sated, drive through the rolling Chianti countryside to the charming hilltop town of Montepulciano, known for its ruby-red Vino di Nobile and Rosso di Montepulciano wines, produced here since early medieval times. Visit one of the town’s oldest rock-cut wine cellars and hear how the region’s wines are produced as you run your palate by some of the varieties.

After your wine sampling, return to Rome, where your tour ends with a drop-off at your hotel or a choice of points in the center.
